My son the artist by: Old Fart Thu, 02-07-02, 04:23PM
The Editor says to keep it light 'till the site's secure so here's some shit from our resident artist. He's creating a deck of playing cards. Here, he's using himself as a model for the Joker.

And here's his Queen:

The deck is just about finished. I'll try to get him to provide a link to the whole thing.

i really like the queen... kid's got some talent! the design reminds me of a tribal tatoo design i saw... maybe he should look into small scale mass production and sell the decks on ebay or something (may be a money maker) ...

He's designed several tatoos for friends including two of his own. He may have found himself a niche in the art world. Wait'll you see the rest of the kings and queens.

i have six of them... the two on my legs are quite large, and yes they do hurt ...of course there are plenty of ways to turn the pain into little more than minor discomfort! i.e. breathing, relaxation techniques, WEED, definitely not alcohol though.

the reason i say not alcohol is that people make bad decisions when drunk...and tatoos dont mix well with poor judgement.

Gardenski: more importantly, alcohol thins your blood and will result in it not coagulating like it should, thus causing the ink to smear, scabs to form, and a generally unattractive tattoo.

The best thing you could do is to take some pain meds before going and drink a lot of Mountain Dew (or something similar) to boost your sugar levels.

PS: OF & Reverend, the cards look very sweet. I'm a huge fan of tribal, even though it is rather played out these days; I still think it's cool.

However, it seems like more of a novelty item, though. Poker would be rather frustrating playing with those. Oh yeah, where's the Jack? Remember, if you want to make the deck accurate, there should be two Jacks with only one eye showing. (i.e. "One-eyed Jacks wild.")

Thanks for the input 'yall...

Well, its supposed to be confusing. Im in a class that focuses on the process of creating good art, relating experiences, etc. etc. Without getting long winded or anything, the idea of this deck is to be confusing, and very alien see and use.

When I had my tattoos done, the guy who did them (a very respectable artist) called them "industrial" mostly because of the gear type structure. I base most all my drawings on gears and how they notch and curve and whatnot.

I actually study tribal designs as well so as to not be tribal. And i can back this up as well... what i do resembles tribal, but is on a different level. There are many differences in form, direction, weight, spacing etc.

I'm considering labeling the King, Queen, and Jack as the Demon, the Bitch, and the Stag.

Reverand: as far as tatooing goes I say if you're into it go for it. From what I've learned the best way to get started is to just keep drawing flash and try hang around someone who knows what they are doing and pick up what you can. Tatooing takes practice, even if you can draw really well, and it takes some time to get proficient.I've been pretty interested in doing tatoos for quite awhile now, though I doubt I could make a career out of it. From what I've seen you would probably be damn good at it.

Slak: You have to be careful with some painkillers as well. Some of these can thin the blood prevent clotting, making things messy and fucking up the tattoo. Some shops use a lotion that numbs the skin[I forget the name], but it has drawbacks. When it comes to the pain its best to smoke a bowl or just deal with it.

This comment is on the ambiguity of the cards:
They are cool enough that I would learn to tell them apart. Once I knew that you count the segments, I pretty much can remember which card they are by the shape.

You got it Matt, adapting an alien form to a regognizable symbol synonomous with our numbering system. And making it look good too.
