So, as some of you may be aware, vinyl is "making a comeback" over the last 6 months to a year.
What I love most about this is that a little over a year ago some friends and I were drinking at a local bar, got drunk, started talking about vinyl, and it came out how my wife had a still working record player collecting dust in a spare room, and I have about 200 45's my mom gave me about 15 years ago. This led to the drunken walk from said bar back to our place to dust off said record player and said 45's for a night of more drinks, and spins of many Beatle's , Stone's, Hermans Hermits, Monkeys, etc. This then led to many trips to the local vinyl store, Enterprise records (specializes in blues and classic rock vinyl), and the NEW vinyl store in town "Sounds Absurd" (great name and specializes in 80's vinyl). A while ago, we also hit up a viyl store in Portsmouth that specialized in punk/metal/industrial albums. At this point, I am SO happy with my growing collection of shit. My favorites are... -of 45's, Status Quo's "Pictures of Matchstick Men," Beatle's "Helter Skelter", Sam the Sham "Little Red Riding Hood", Five Stairsteps "oooh Child", and the 45 that made two of my friends orgasm when they saw it..... "Their coming to take me away Hh-Ha!" by Napoleon XIV. Of full length albums.... -My three Bauhuas albums -Four Ramones, two of which WERE sealed, but fuck that I wanna hear them man. -The very first three song My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult album. -My radio station promo vinyl for Robert Johnson from the 50's, two albums, lots of AWESOME shit. -A Leadbelly collection. -And of course, Creedence. Fuck man, Creedence sounds AWESOME on vinyl. -A picture album of Rob Zombie's "Hellbilly Deluxe" (The album cover on side one, and the CD art on side two) ============================== =============== So all of that said, any of y'all collect vinyl? If so, what ya got in your collections? And, as always comes up with us getting drunk and listening to vinyl (which we are doing this evening as well)..... Seriously, think about "HOW" a record player works. Does it make sense? Really? I mean, watch the fucking needle travel in the grooves and think about how these specific sounds are eminated from it. A singer, a drummer, guitar, bass, all picked up from that fucking needle and vibrations from grooves? AND they had this technology over 100 years ago?!? Fucking magic, man. Fucking magic. Off to grab a beer and listen to some Tears For Fears......
aw man I love my turntable, maintain it like a holy relic.
I have lbs of 45's, plus lotsa albums. Flogging molly, earth wind n fire, the doors first album the who heart (yeah I said it, heart) just got this one
Our collection melted along with most of our belongings during the great apartment fire of 2004.
We gave up after that.
I have a TON of vinyl including a very rare original 1962 Beatles 'Love Me Do' and a coveted Beatles White album with the serial number on the sleeve.
And my 1973 vintage Dual turntable still works just fine, thank you.
i am thinking about doing a series of paintings on vinyl records.

I have a few that i've collected throughout the years. I have a BSF album that was only released on vinyl and a couple from a punk band from my hometown Ephrata that was formed in the late 70s that is still around today. I haven't had a record player since before highschool and i have virtually no interest in hearing music on vinyl. Sure, you get a different sound on vinyl but if the band wanted it to be heard that way they wouldnt have digitally recorded and mixed it clean. sure, they still toss shit on wax, but the CD is their intended sound. Some bands will actually pursue the vinyl sound and actually record their stuff on either dated gear, digitally alter the recording, etc to get it and release it, so even if youre playing it on CD it sounds classic. Collecting vinyl is just like collecting anything else. People that seek out and collect new recordings and rave about them are just doing it to be a hipster douchebag. people that seek out classic recordings of stuff that just isnt in production any more are in the pursuit of a dream, or theyre hipster douchebags. its 50/50.
i remember katies old bathroom had old records hung on the walls for decorations (not like a few select, it was at least a dozen in a small ass bathroom.) that was a good use if you ask me. gave the room a unique look, even compared to the rest of their apartment.
Quote: my dad had a really really in depth beattles collection (as well as zz top, neil young, crosby stills nash, etc), they were his all time favorite band (shit he hadnt been shot yet when i was born and my middle name is John because of lennons influence on my dad) and i remember him having both of those albums. i would say around 85-87 he sold his entire vinyl collection to a collector to pay for christmas and get out of debt. the thought of what he could actually get for it now a days is pretty ridiculous. im sure he got a fair bit for it then, since lennon was shot in 80 and people knew that was the end so all his shit was gonna be collectors gold.

I'm a little of each of these. Just picked up the new White Stripes Live in Canada album on vinyl. I figured their live show in particular would translate well to a less polished vinyl sound, and it did. As for collectors, if it weren't for the hipster douchebags, I wouldn't have as many stores to buy from now. Two of the three stores I've gone to in the last six months opened in the last six months. My collection started with the 200 45's and about 40-50 full lengths. I've added maybe 50 more full lengths since I started seeking out older shit. I agree with your point, but without them/me (trendy collectors), I'd be relegated to what I find at Enterprise Records, which has been around for twenty years and has an awesome blues and 60's/early 70's selection, but not much else. I want me some 80's shit, man! And speaking of collectors, like with toys/comics/anything else collectable, I have a pet peeve. "Sealed" stuff. Now, I KNOW why it's more valuable, but I get pissed at the fact that the ONLY copy of say "Road to Ruin" I can find in the New England area is sealed, and thereby costs me $22 instead of around $6-$10, which seems to be the average for opened Ramones shit. I'm trying to get all the Ramones shit, and damn it, I paid the $22, just to go home and open the mother fucker. I buy this shit to listen to, not look at. Who the fuck had this copy sitting sealed for twenty years? Why own it if you don't listen to it?

Thanks! They were 45's from the 80's. I saved a few of them after the fire, all curled up from the heat.
