I've spent the greater part of my life with one eye on the horizon looking for a revolution.
this is NOT what I meant.
I am sickened and alarmed with the apparent ease with which Texas has discarded and manipulated the basic principals this country was grown from. Little things like separation of church and state being necessary to ensure freedom of religion. Bigger things, like "They also replaced the word “capitalism” throughout their texts with the “free-enterprise system" Again, I'm amazed by life emulating "1984" I'd feel a little better if everyone in my country knew the significance of "newspeak" cuz that's what this shit is.
Texas has over 15million people, and is experiencing the second highest population growth in the country right now. And aaaallll these people are teaching aaaaaalll those children this twisted misinformation, shaping detremental beliefs.

my tummy hurts

LunaLoca: Although I raised an eyebrow several times whilst reading that article, I think that ultimately, Texas can choose to do things its way, just as any other state can choose to do things its way, or even any other country can choose to do things its way. If Texas really does want to make itself arsebackwards, then people will vote with their feet, or maybe they won't. Maybe culture is more important and maybe many Texans want that. Maybe other people are out of step and should leave. Maybe it is Texas' (and Texans') choice to do things its way, unless of course, you believe that the state (in the broader sense of government) shouldn't be telling anyone what to do. Funnily enough though, there are very few real libertarians (or people of similar ideology) out there. I notice that most people are fine with government pushing all sorts of agendas on other people when they (the original people in this sentence) agree with that agenda, but suddenly become quite upset when government tries to push someone else's agenda on them. Again, funny that.

What exactly are the basic principles that the U.S. was grown from, and do you agree with (or at least defend) all of them? I mean, do we include slavery, Manifest Destiny or other unpalatable ideas amongst all of that? What would 18th Century Americans think of 19th, 20th or 21st Century America? Would they even recognise that latter American society evolved from their own? (Even at the individual level, I wonder. My best friend in Taiwan has beside his desk a list of Franklin's ideals for living life and they don't seem to resemble much of how modern Americans live, not that other people live much better if at all, and not that Americans in Franklin's day necessarily even lived by his ideals.) Would they be impressed or dismayed at the size and scope of the U.S. Government, or is it okay to say that the U.S. Government should quite reasonably be involved in a whole lot of activities but that the Texas Board of Education shouldn't be involved in one area (albeit significant still) of people's lives?

The thing that strikes me about these so-called Culture Wars in the U.S. is that leaving aside the moderate or apathetic middle for a moment, there seems to be little chance of actually reconciling the two sides on any issue. Either way, short of eventually defeating the other side by physical force or by simply out-breeding them, neither side is ever going to largely win. As such, those on both sides either have to accept that as hard as they may push, they're never going to achieve complete victory, and will have to live with ongoing conflict, or if they become that embittered with each other and can't find other common ground, then they'll eventually have to separate.
